In this podcast I discuss the ways in which the read-receipt feature – introduced by Facebook and WhatsApp – have reshaped how we perform friendships online, and in particular participated in enforcing social expectations of connectivity, availability and peer monitoring.
The programme explores more broadly the unspoken transactional expectations and performances of friendships in the digital age and how online spaces are changing the ways in which we connect.
